Sweden marks 500 years since first Swedish New Testament translation

Sweden is commemorating the 500th anniversary of the first Swedish translation of the New Testament, first printed in 1526 under the reign of Gustav Vasa. The translation, known as the Vasabibeln, has been credited with shaping the Swedish language, literature and cultural identity.

Celebrations include a ceremony in Kalmar's city park featuring the neo‑Gothic Vasamonument, erected to honor Gustav Vasa’s historic landing. A public event is also scheduled for 15 August on the rooftop of Stockholm’s Kulturhuset, with music, speeches, theatre and a special focus on the Swedish alphabet’s letter Å. The programme lists linguists, authors, musicians and poet‑performers, and is hosted by Patrik Hadenius, with the Army Music Band providing fanfare.

Both events highlight the lasting influence of the Vasabibeln on Swedish society and language, marking a milestone in the nation’s cultural heritage.
