Sweden marks start of fresh potato season and local food resilience initiatives

The first harvest of Swedish field-grown fresh potatoes has begun in Torekov. Following a favorable spring, the initial limited volumes are expected to reach selected Coop stores, primarily in southern Sweden, starting April 29. Due to high demand and low initial supply, the price is expected to be approximately 300 SEK per kilogram, though prices are anticipated to decrease as availability increases.

In Rättvik, a community gardening project called ‘Solidaritetsodlingen’ has transformed a former lawn into a productive garden featuring potatoes, beets, lettuce, squash, pumpkin, and peas. This initiative is a collaboration between Civilförsvarsförbundet, Svenska Kyrkan, and Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan as part of a national effort titled ‘Mat till alla, nära och tillsammans’. The project aims to build local food production capacity and community knowledge to increase resilience in the event of future crises.
