Sweden maternity care faces crisis amid staffing shortages

Healthcare services in Sweden, particularly maternity and gynecological care, are facing significant challenges due to staffing shortages and budget cuts. In the Skåne region, maternity wards have been impacted by a lack of midwives, leading to the closure of delivery rooms and forcing pregnant women to be prepared to give birth at alternative hospitals. Reports indicate that some patients have been redirected between facilities in Malmö and Lund, with one instance involving a woman giving birth at home after being moved between hospitals.

Nationally, critics argue that healthcare cuts are disproportionately affecting women's health services. In Sörmland, Mälarsjukhuset has reported insufficient staffing in maternity and gynecological departments, while Katrineholm lacks a gynecologist. Additionally, neonatal care beds in Nyköping have remained closed for several years despite being ready. Advocates call for an end to austerity measures and hiring freezes to improve working conditions and ensure patient safety.
