Sweden orders deportation of British man with advanced dementia

A Swedish migration court has ordered the deportation of 74-year-old British citizen Horace Mason, who has lived in Sweden for 25 years. Mason suffers from advanced vascular dementia and vascular parkinsonism, conditions that leave him immobile and requiring 24-hour care.

The court ruled that the state's interest in regulating immigration outweighs Mason's individual interest in remaining in the country. While his family argued that his health makes relocation impossible, the court maintained that adequate care for dementia patients is available in the United Kingdom, where his daughter resides.

Mason's son, Carl Mason, described the decision as ‘inhumane,’ noting that his father is unable to travel or start a new life independently. The case highlights the ongoing impact of Brexit on British citizens residing in Sweden, with reports indicating that over 2,500 British nationals have been deported from the country in recent years.
