Sweden pension updates: income increases and withdrawal risks

Sweden's pension system will see an increase in income pensions by 2.2 percent starting in January 2027. However, the Swedish Pensions Agency (Pensionsmyndigheten) has announced that no extra surplus payments will be distributed in 2027. While a new mechanism known as 'the gas' was designed to provide extra payouts when system assets exceed liabilities, the balance index for 2027 is estimated at 1.1472, falling just short of the 1.15 threshold required for distribution.

Separately, financial analysis from Skandia highlights potential risks regarding occupational pension withdrawals. Choosing to withdraw occupational pensions over a short period, such as five years, can lead to significantly lower monthly income in later life. In one modeled scenario, a worker's monthly income after tax could drop by over 19,000 SEK compared to a lifelong withdrawal option, as the temporary high payments expire while living costs remain.
