Sweden police warn of rising online fraud and firewood scams

Authorities in Sweden are warning consumers about various online fraud schemes, specifically targeting those purchasing firewood through platforms like Facebook Marketplace. Scammers often use fake advertisements to solicit advance payments for goods that are never delivered.

In one reported case, an individual was nearly recruited into a money laundering scheme after being asked to transfer funds received in her private account to foreign accounts under the guise of employment. Police have noted a rise in fraudulent firewood ads in southern Sweden, some of which have been linked to larger suspected money laundering operations.

Police estimate that fraud-related criminal profits in Sweden could reach approximately 5.7 billion SEK in 2025. To avoid scams, authorities advise consumers to avoid advance payments, remain cautious of high-pressure sales tactics, and attempt to meet sellers in person to inspect goods before paying.
