Sweden positioned to lead Baltic Sea maritime energy transition

Sweden is positioned to play a leading role in the maritime industry's transition to fossil-free operations, according to a report from the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. Approximately 300 hydrogen-related projects are planned around the Baltic Sea, focusing on electro-fuels such as electro-ammonia and electro-methanol. These fuels, created using renewable electricity and captured carbon or nitrogen, could replace fossil fuels in existing combustion engines.

While Sweden possesses strong advantages due to its fossil-free electricity production and industrial clusters, experts note that unclear regulations and market uncertainty remain obstacles to investment. Developing domestic production could enhance energy security and create new export opportunities.

In a related development, researchers at RISE, in collaboration with Wärtsilä and Gotland Tech Development, are working on a concept for next-generation ferries in Nordic waters. This project aims to drastically reduce energy consumption by combining wind propulsion with new propulsion technologies. The resulting vessel concepts are intended to be 'dual-use,' meaning they are designed to be climate-smart while also being capable of supplying energy to society during crisis situations. Testing for these new hull shapes and propulsion systems will take place in a 260-meter ship tank in Gothenburg.
