Sweden launches new tools to strengthen suicide prevention

Sweden is implementing new measures to strengthen suicide prevention and mental health support. A new prioritization tool has been launched for municipalities, regions, and other stakeholders to guide more effective resource allocation, specifically targeting the most vulnerable groups. This initiative was developed through collaboration between the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (NASP), the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the National Board of Health and Welfare, and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.

In response to the need for specialized analysis, the Public Health Agency has established a new unit to investigate suicide cases, with a particular focus on children and adolescents up to age 18. Recent statistics indicate that 1,220 people died by suicide in Sweden in 2025, a slight decrease from the previous year.

Regional efforts, such as those in Stockholm, emphasize integrated care that connects mental and physical health through cooperation between local municipalities and healthcare authorities. Meanwhile, community initiatives in regions like Kalmar are highlighting the high risk of suicide among elderly men, advocating for increased social engagement and early detection of mental health struggles in older populations.
