Sweden probes gender gaps in local politics and online “manosphere”

An audit of Ronneby municipality’s paid political positions shows a stark gender imbalance, with 82.4% of the 56 examined posts awarded to men and no women serving on the municipal executive committee or company boards. Party‑by‑party data reveal that the Social Democrats, Moderates and Sweden Democrats allocate over 80% of their posts to men, while the Liberals allocate 100% to men.

At the national level, the government has tasked the Equality Agency with investigating the so‑called “manosphere” – online spaces that promote a hostile view of feminism. Equality Minister Nina Larsson says the investigation targets algorithmic bias that allows extremist content to spread, noting that “in digital environments known as the manosphere, messages portray women and girls in negative or stereotypical terms.” The inquiry aims to assess whether tech platforms should bear greater responsibility for the gender‑biased dynamics they facilitate.
