Sweden proposes new measures to combat domestic violence

Political leaders in Sweden are proposing different measures to combat violence against women. In Stockholm, the Left Party (Vänsterpartiet) is advocating for a “emergency loophole” in municipal personnel policy. This would grant employees experiencing domestic violence five to ten days of extra paid leave to facilitate fleeing dangerous situations, seeking social services, or arranging protected housing without complex bureaucratic processes.

Separately, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has proposed stricter legal measures to protect women from lethal violence. His proposals include empowering police to issue mandatory warnings to potential victims and relatives, increasing surveillance capabilities such as phone tapping to prevent crimes, and the ability to forcibly detain dangerous men when the risk of violence is clear. These proposals are part of a broader platform to provide law enforcement with more tools to intervene in domestic violence cases.
