Sweden pushes for expanded rail and air services in interior regions

Swedish Social Democratic representatives from the owner municipalities of the Inlandsbanan rail line urged the government to extend the planned upgrade, announced in the spring budget, beyond freight to include modern passenger traffic. They argue the line is a strategic asset for national defence, industry and the development of northern and central Sweden, and that improved rail service would support livelihoods and climate‑friendly travel.

In a separate debate, officials from Härjedalen municipality, Härjedalen Airport and Region Jämtland‑Härjedalen warned that the upcoming 2027 tender by the Swedish Transport Administration could cut capacity on the Sveg‑Arlanda flight route if the current link with Mora is discontinued. They contend that maintaining strong air connectivity is vital for the region’s economy, access to services and future business establishment, and suggest using Härjedalen Airport as an alternative hub to preserve larger aircraft operations.

Both initiatives seek to strengthen transport infrastructure in Sweden’s interior to boost regional development, economic resilience and national preparedness.
