Sweden railway infrastructure gaps impact labor market and trade

Deficiencies in Sweden’s railway infrastructure are increasingly viewed as a significant labor market and economic challenge. A survey by the union Unionen reveals that nearly one-third of private white-collar employees in Värmland have declined job opportunities due to inadequate commuting options or unreliable connections. Nationally, these infrastructure gaps are estimated to limit the career prospects of hundreds of thousands of employees, hindering talent supply and economic growth.

In southern Sweden, the Öresund region is identified as a critical strategic hub for Europe, yet it faces significant bottlenecks. An EU report on the ScanMed corridor highlights these issues, noting that the region is vital for trade and preparedness between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Business leaders, including the CEO of the South Swedish Chamber of Commerce, have expressed concern regarding Sweden's readiness for increased traffic flows once the Fehmarn Belt tunnel is completed.

While some investments are planned through 2037, critics argue that current maintenance and expansion efforts are insufficient. For instance, only ten percent of required railway maintenance is scheduled to be addressed in the current planning period, with the remaining ninety percent deferred to the period ending in 2050.
