Sweden records surge in personalized vehicle registration plates

In 2025 the Swedish Transport Agency approved 28 personalized vehicle registration plates in Södertälje, eight more than the previous year, raising the municipality's total to 286 plates—174 attached to vehicles and 112 dormant. The cost for a ten‑year right is 6,900 SEK, with most of the fee supporting Trafikverket’s sign fund for traffic‑safety projects.

Nationwide, 3,407 personalized plates were approved in 2024, bringing the country’s total to roughly 28,000 active plates, a record level. During 2025, 222 applications were rejected, mainly because the requested combinations were deemed potentially offensive, with variations of “FUCK”, “666”, “SEX” and “XXX” topping the list. Some previously rejected strings, such as “GROGG” and “KATANA”, have since been approved. In Vimmerby, three plates were approved last year—two new and one renewal—illustrating the continued local demand for custom identifiers.
