Strömsundsbron bridge closed after heavy transport damage
The Strömsund Bridge in Sweden remains closed following damage caused by a 100-ton heavy transport late Tuesday evening. The bridge was closed after the vehicle, which had received a permit from Trafikverket to cross, caused damage to the northern abutment.
Currently, the 100-ton transport is being left on the bridge to serve as a counterweight. Experts from Trafikverket fear that removing the entire weight of the transport could cause the road surface to lift further. Specialists in Stockholm and Gothenburg are analyzing data and measurements to determine how to safely move the vehicle.
Adriano Maglica, a national coordinator for large bridges at Trafikverket, stated that crews are inspecting the concrete foundations and comparing physical findings with original blueprints. While investigations continue, Maglica assessed late Thursday that there is no immediate risk of a collapse.
