Sweden reports record number of TBE virus cases
Sweden has recorded a record number of TBE (Tick-Borne Encephalitis) cases this year. According to statistics from the Public Health Agency (Folkhälsomyndigheten), 448 cases were reported up to September 14, surpassing the 392 cases reported during the same period in 2023.
TBE is a viral disease spread by ticks that can lead to severe illness. Approximately one in three infected individuals experience the virus spreading to the brain or meninges, which can result in paralysis or death.
Caroline Schönning, an investigator at the Public Health Agency, noted that the increase is difficult to pinpoint due to multiple factors, including tick prevalence, host populations like deer and rodents, and weather patterns. Over the last decade, TBE cases have increased by approximately 6 percent annually. The agency has recommended TBE vaccination for all adults and children over the age of three in much of southern Sweden.
