Sweden Enacts Broad Legal Reforms Effective July 1, 2026
On 1 July 2026 Sweden will introduce a series of new laws affecting everyday life. Elderly‑care providers must ensure staff meet Swedish language standards, prompting employers to offer language support. Customs rules change, ending the €150‑value exemption for parcels from outside the EU and imposing a €3 fee per product type. The VAT on dance‑band events drops from 25 % to 6 % to align with other cultural activities. Cash payments become mandatory in staffed grocery stores and pharmacies, and banks must facilitate cash deposits for private individuals. A temporary fuel tax reduction of three kronor per litre will run from July to November, and the price of monthly public‑transport tickets is halved nationwide until the end of the year.
These measures aim to improve language accessibility in care, curb low‑value imports, support cultural events, protect cash‑using citizens, lower fuel costs temporarily, and make commuting cheaper.
