Sweden school start highlights student mental health concerns
As the new school term begins in Sweden, discussions have emerged regarding student mental health and the challenges of transitioning back to academic routines. A school psychologist from Region Gotland suggests that guardians support their children by discussing expectations, establishing early morning routines, and managing extracurricular activities to ensure adequate recovery time.
However, concerns persist regarding systemic issues within the Swedish school system. The Center Party has highlighted that many students experience anxiety, stress, and fear related to bullying or inadequate classroom environments. They noted that approximately 20,000 students annually leave compulsory school without the qualifications required for upper secondary education, a trend they attribute to a lack of qualified teachers and insufficient support systems. The party is calling for reforms, including mandatory support measures, smaller class sizes, and more diverse pathways to vocational programs.
