Sweden seeks to increase organ donation rates through new approaches

New approaches in Sweden aim to increase organ donation rates, potentially adding 80 more donors annually. Currently, only 1.9 million Swedes are registered in the donation registry, though 80 percent of those registered are positive about donating after death.

Medical experts identify several barriers to registration. Pia Löwhagen Hendén, a donation doctor at Regionalt Donationscentrum Väst, suggests that convenience and a lack of knowledge on how to register are primary factors, noting that registration is now easily accessible via digital services.

Anna Forsberg, a professor at Lund University and Skåne University Hospital, highlights psychological hurdles, including a societal reluctance to discuss death and misconceptions regarding the respectful treatment of the body during surgery. While the number of donors decreased slightly last year, levels remain high compared to the previous decade. Sweden operates under a system of presumed consent.
