Sweden sees record tourism in June 2026 amid rising hotel bankruptcies in July
Sweden's tourism statistics for June 2026 show a new record of 7,581,620 guest nights, a 3 % increase over June 2025 and about 24 % higher than a decade earlier. Foreign visitors accounted for 28.7 % of all nights, with the largest markets being Germany (538,899 nights, –0.6 % YoY), Norway (433,140 nights, +10.7 % YoY), the United States (214,493 nights, +7.2 % YoY), the Netherlands (131,012 nights, +2.5 % YoY) and Denmark (115,120 nights, –0.9 % YoY). Visit Sweden’s chief executive Susanne Andersson highlighted the continued growth driven by favourable exchange rates and Sweden’s outdoor appeal.
Despite the strong tourist flow, July 2026 saw a 21 % rise in bankruptcies among hotels and restaurants compared with the same month a year earlier, according to UC analyst Amanda Aldestam. Overall corporate bankruptcies in Sweden rose 4 % in July, making the hospitality sector the hardest‑hit segment of the economy.
