Sweden signs €4.3 billion deal for four French frigates

Sweden and France have signed a €4.3 billion agreement for the procurement of four advanced French-built FDI-class frigates. The deal, finalized in Stockholm during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to significantly bolster Sweden's naval capabilities and its contribution to NATO's integrated air and missile defense in the Baltic Sea region.

Manufactured by Naval Group, the vessels—to be known as the Luleå-class—will provide long-range maritime capabilities and protection against ballistic missiles. The acquisition is expected to triple Sweden's current air-defense capacity. The first frigate is scheduled for delivery in 2030, with subsequent vessels following in 2032, 2033, and 2034.

The agreement also establishes a broader framework for long-term strategic defense cooperation between the two nations, covering operational, industrial, and technological development. This partnership is viewed as a step toward increasing European military autonomy and strengthening the European pillar of NATO in response to heightened security concerns following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
