Sweden strengthens civil defense and emergency infrastructure

Sweden is intensifying its civil preparedness and total defense measures. In Gävleborg, regional and local leaders are advocating for the establishment of an emergency airport in Söderhamn. They argue that the site, located at the former F15 airbase, offers strategic advantages including existing infrastructure, proximity to major transport routes, and capacity for both small and large aircraft. The facility is deemed essential for medical transport, police, firefighting, and national defense.

Simultaneously, the Swedish government has tasked County Administrative Boards with strengthening the ability of municipalities and regions to rapidly prepare bomb shelters in designated risk areas. Gotland has been identified as a high-risk area that could be a target in an armed conflict. Authorities are required to assess regional capabilities and map existing expertise, with oral reports due by June 2027 and final reports by November 2027. Currently, Sweden maintains approximately 64,000 shelters capable of accommodating 7 million people.
