Sweden study: Summer drinkers eager to return to work routines

A new study indicates that individuals who increase their alcohol consumption during the summer holidays are often the most eager to return to work and daily routines. In Sweden, summer holidays are frequently associated with higher levels of drinking compared to the rest of the year, with alcohol often linked to relaxation, social connection, and a sense of reward.

Karolina Dahlbeck Nobel, a public health expert at Systembolaget, noted a duality in attitudes: those who most strongly associate alcohol with the summer feeling are also the ones who welcome the return to weekday routines most. Among Swedes who primarily associate alcohol with summer, 60 percent expressed relief at returning to everyday life.

The data shows higher consumption rates among highly educated groups, with 47 percent of highly educated men and 37 percent of highly educated women drinking several times a week or daily during the summer. Psychotherapist Anders Hammarberg from Beroendecentrum Stockholm suggested that the return to routine offers a natural opportunity to reflect on consumption habits, noting that men may tend to delay seeking support for alcohol-related issues.
