Sweden population growth hits historic low
Sweden's population grew by 5,000 people during the first half of 2026, marking one of the lowest increases since the turn of the millennium. According to Statistics Sweden, this slowdown is driven by declining birth rates and a lower net migration surplus.
As the population growth slows, the retail and service sectors face potential challenges regarding long-term demand and market expansion. Experts suggest that competition for consumers will become increasingly critical in regions where population numbers are stagnant or declining.
