Sweden to close Bergsmansgården youth home due to safety concerns

The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (Statens institutionsstyrelse, SiS) has decided to phase out operations at the Bergsmansgården youth home in Brotorp, near Örebro. The decision was made because the agency can no longer guarantee that the youth at the facility receive safe and secure care and treatment.

According to SiS Director General Martin Valfridsson, the facility faces significant challenges, including major deficiencies in fire safety that are not considered economically or operationally justifiable to repair. Additionally, the agency has identified recurring issues in the care and treatment environment, alongside high staff turnover that has led to operational inefficiencies.

The agency aims to complete the closure by June 30, 2027. Plans are being developed to ensure a stable transition for the youth currently in care and to support affected employees. The Granhult section of the facility is intended to be reorganized under the management of the Sundbo youth home.
