Sweden to implement new chemical regulations in 2026

New chemical regulations are set to take effect in Sweden during the late summer and autumn of 2026. According to the Swedish Chemicals Agency, these updates include stricter limits on formaldehyde emissions in goods such as furniture, flooring, and textiles. Additionally, new EU packaging regulations will restrict PFAS in food packaging, and further restrictions will target PFHxA in clothing, footwear, and cosmetics starting in October 2026. New requirements for PFAS in firefighting foams will also be implemented in late October.

In a related development, researchers at Stockholm University conducted a study on 60 children's garments sold in Sweden. While all tested items complied with current EU regulations, the study identified several chemicals used in textile dyeing that are not yet covered by existing legislation.

The research, part of the Mistra SafeChem program, highlighted significant differences between materials. Darker synthetic garments, particularly polyester, contained higher concentrations of chemicals compared to light-colored cotton clothing. The study also found that these substances were more difficult to remove from polyester through washing, whereas they washed away more easily from cotton.
