Sweden to implement new fire cell requirements for large battery storage

New fire safety regulations in Sweden will require battery storage systems exceeding 20 kWh to be placed in dedicated fire cells starting in the summer of 2025. According to Boverket's fire engineer Johan Lindbom, the 20 kWh limit applies to the total capacity of the energy storage system. If multiple smaller batteries are installed that collectively exceed this threshold, they must be housed in a fire cell to prevent mutual impact in the event of a fire.

For residential villas, the fire cell must meet EI30 construction standards, which include specific fire resistance for walls, doors, and penetrations to delay fire spread. The regulations focus on the total capacity of the installation rather than individual unit specifications.
