Sweden to meet only one of 16 environmental goals by 2030
Sweden is projected to meet only one of its 16 environmental quality goals by 2030, according to an analysis by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The goals, established by the Swedish Parliament in 1999, were intended to ensure a healthy environment for future generations.
The only goal certain to be achieved is the protection of the ozone layer, which is showing signs of recovery. While progress is being made toward goals regarding fresh air and safe radiation environments, many other areas are trending in the wrong direction. Specifically, climate impact, living forests, and rich biodiversity are facing significant challenges due to climate change and land exploitation.
Sabina Vinnmyr, an official at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, noted that while the situation is serious, some trends are improving. For instance, decades of work on acidification have successfully reversed negative trends, even if the final goal has not yet been reached. Vinnmyr described the goals as “visionary in nature,” noting that environmental recovery often takes a long time to show measurable results.
