Sweden to miss quota refugee target due to government delays
Sweden is expected to fall significantly short of its annual quota refugee target due to government delays. While the government set a goal to receive 900 quota refugees by the end of the year, the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) now estimates that only 350 will be admitted.
The delay was caused by a ten-month wait for government approval regarding a proposal that includes the selection of specific countries and refugee groups for resettlement. Although the Migration Agency required a decision by mid-September to maintain its schedule, the Ministry of Justice did not provide instructions until October 5. This delay has prevented the agency from executing planned trips and managing the distribution of places, ultimately making the original target unachievable.
