Sweden to retire NH90 helicopters and expand Black Hawk fleet

The Swedish Armed Forces have confirmed the gradual retirement of nine NH90 TTH tactical transport helicopters, designated as Hkp 14E, starting in 2027. This decision is part of the 2027 defense budget plan and follows long-standing issues regarding the availability and maintenance of the NH90 fleet.

To replace the retiring aircraft, Sweden is expanding its fleet of Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawks, known locally as Hkp 16. Following a 2024 decision to acquire 12 additional Black Hawks through the US Foreign Military Sales program, the total fleet will grow to 27 aircraft. The Swedish military intends to standardize its medium helicopter fleet around the American model due to the Black Hawks' proven performance.

The nine remaining NH90 helicopters, the Hkp 14F naval variant, will stay in service for the time being. These aircraft are configured for maritime missions, including anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue. However, Sweden plans to begin the acquisition process for a new maritime helicopter to eventually replace the Hkp 14F fleet.
