Sweden to Review National Cryptography System, Relax Camera Surveillance Rules

The Swedish government has appointed a special investigator to conduct a comprehensive review of the national system for cryptographic functions from a total‑defence perspective. The review aims to ensure a fit‑for‑purpose, efficient system that meets defence requirements and supports a sustainable national crypto industry.

In a related move, a separate special investigator has been tasked with analysing and mapping the current legal framework for camera surveillance. The mandate is to propose clearer and broader legal possibilities for law‑enforcement and other public actors, potentially integrating the rules into the general data‑protection legislation. The investigation seeks to simplify existing regulations, remove barriers to use, and enhance crime prevention and public safety, with a final report due by 31 August 2027. Both initiatives were announced by Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer.
