Sweden to impose longer sentences for repeat offenders ahead of election

Sweden’s government announced a legislative package that would require courts to impose harsher penalties on serial offenders by counting all offences committed in a single sentence. The proposal also reduces the weight of mitigating factors such as loss of employment. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said the changes are expected to lead to significantly longer terms for repeat criminals.

The measures are part of a broader crackdown on gang‑related crime, which has been a major electoral issue ahead of the September parliamentary vote. Other elements of the package include tougher penalties for gang crimes, expanded electronic surveillance powers for police and the possibility of incarcerating offenders from age 14.
