Sweden trains in damaged Dallas stadium, draws 1-1 with Japan at WC 2026
Sweden’s national team held its final preparation for the Round of 16 match against France at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, north of Dallas, three days before the game. The venue was partially damaged, with collapsed sections of seating, blocked access points and limited facilities, forcing the squad to train on auxiliary pitches and navigate safety concerns.
Earlier in the tournament, Sweden faced Japan in the last group‑stage round in Dallas. Japan took the lead in the 56th minute through Daizen Maeda, but Sweden equalised six minutes later when Anthony Elanga scored. The 1‑1 draw left Japan second and Sweden third in Group F, allowing both teams to advance to the knockout stage. Sweden’s coach Jonas Ericsson and Japan’s staff noted the match’s tactical intensity and the importance of securing the point for progression.
