Sweden updates hunting regulations and wildlife management policies
Sweden is seeing significant developments in wildlife management and hunting policy. The Christian Democrats (KD) have proposed classifying shooting ranges as critical infrastructure to improve preparedness and reduce administrative burdens. Additionally, the party suggested that organized hunting activities or licenses should be eligible for wellness grants, similar to gym memberships.
Regarding wildlife regulation, the Swedish government has announced new hunting rules effective July 1, 2027. These rules expand general hunting for several species, such as field hare and various waterfowl, and increase opportunities for protective hunting of certain species. However, the government rejected a proposal from the Swedish Hunters' Association to allow dog hunting for red deer hinds and calves during the September moose hunting season.
In wildlife conservation, the brown bear hunting quota for this year has been reduced to 394, down from 465 last year. Despite this reduction, the WWF has expressed concern that the bear population is declining due to extensive licensed hunting and efficient tracking methods, warning of potential long-term consequences for the ecosystem.
