Thomas Nilsson, head of the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST), has warned of a high level of threat from Russian hybrid warfare targeting NATO members, including Sweden. The objective of these sophisticated destabilization campaigns is to create insecurity, fracture alliances, and undermine Western support for Ukraine.

The warning follows an incident in August where an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, an event German authorities have linked to Russia. Nilsson characterized the drone incident as a hybrid attack that signals a shift toward a more dangerous phase of aggression.

In response, the Swedish National Security Council met to discuss these developments. While Germany, Poland, and the Baltic states remain the primary targets of Russian hybrid operations, Nilsson cautioned that the strategic focus could shift rapidly toward other NATO nations. Sweden is currently increasing security measures to protect activities related to its support for Ukraine.
