Sweden's AP3 pension fund reports 7.6% return in first half of 2026

Sweden’s Third National Pension Fund, AP3, reported a 7.6% net return for the first half of 2026, driven largely by a rally in listed equities. The fund’s assets grew to SEK 891 billion by June 30, up from SEK 577.1 billion at the start of the year. This significant increase was primarily due to the consolidation of Sweden’s buffer-fund structure, which included the transfer of SEK 255.8 billion from the closed Första AP-fonden (AP1).

AP3’s listed-equity portfolio saw an 11.5% return, contributing 5.8 percentage points to the overall performance. Strongest market performances were noted in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. Additionally, a Swedish investment firm has made a substantial $3 billion allocation to venture capital, positioning itself as a major institutional player in the asset class during a period of lower valuations and slower fundraising.
