Sweden's Moderaterna aim to extend travel bans to siblings of children

During a three‑day bus tour, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Social Services Minister Camilla Waltersson Grönvall presented the Moderaterna party’s proposal to broaden existing travel bans for children at risk of honor‑related violence. The amendment would automatically allow a ban to include the child’s siblings when a court decides a child should not be taken abroad for forced marriage, female genital mutilation or similar harm.

The government says current rules, expanded in 2024, still contain loopholes – families have sometimes sent siblings abroad instead. While exact figures are unavailable, officials acknowledge both reported cases and a likely dark figure. Waltersson Grönvall called the change “an important next step,” and Kristersson stressed that legislation must be broad enough that families cannot evade it.
