Sweden's Oliver Sandberg to miss European Athletics Championships
Swedish pole vaulter Oliver Sandberg will miss the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham due to an injury sustained during a training session. Sandberg's pole broke during his final practice before departure, causing him to fall and sustain injuries to his wrist, back, and neck.
National team captain Kajsa Bergqvist expressed disappointment, noting Sandberg's significant progress during the 2026 season. Sandberg indicated his focus will shift toward recovery and the 2027 indoor season.
Sweden is sending a record-sized delegation of 66 athletes to the championships held at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Medal hopes for the Swedish team include Armand Duplantis in pole vault, as well as Axelina Johansson, Fanny Roos, and Wictor Petersson in shot put. The event features 1,645 athletes from 49 nations, while Russia and Belarus remain unrepresented due to the war in Ukraine.
