Swedish Riksdag to convene with high number of new members
Following the recent elections, the new Swedish Riksdag is set to convene with approximately 25 percent of its 349 members being newcomers. The Left Party (V) has the highest proportion of new representatives, with 17 out of 30 members (57 percent) being new to parliamentary work. Among these is Mohamed Ali, who is taking a hiatus pending a police investigation into potential election fraud in his constituency.
The Liberal Party (L) follows with 42 percent new members, including party leader Simona Mohamsson. The Green Party (MP) also sees significant turnover, with 36 percent of its members being new. Of the 97 total newcomers, five secured their seats through personal preference votes (personkryss).
In other regional developments, political shifts are noted in Kiruna, where the Christian Democrats saw success amid conflicts between reindeer husbandry and mining interests, specifically regarding the Per Geijer rare earth metal deposit. In Dalarna, the Social Democrats face challenges as the local labor market shifts away from traditional industrial manufacturing toward service and information sectors.
