Sweden's RV boom strains parking spots in Värmland

Registrations of motorhomes (husbilar) in Sweden have more than doubled over the past two years, with over 3 500 new vehicles recorded between January and June 2026. The surge mirrors growth across Europe, where the European Caravan Federation reports double‑digit increases in most countries.

In Värmland, the rapid rise of RVs has outpaced the expansion of parking infrastructure. At a site in Kristinehamn, up to fifty motorhomes are turned away each day, leaving owners scrambling for alternatives. Parking‑site owner Tommy Gustafsson warned that without nationwide upgrades, “it will become chaos.” Existing owners such as Roar Bakke describe the situation as increasingly stressful, highlighting the mismatch between demand and available spots.

The shortage underscores broader challenges for Swedish and European caravan operators as the hobby gains popularity while municipal facilities lag behind.
