Sweden's Värmland Leads Organic Farming Ranking as Malmö Pushes for More Local Produce

In 2025, Värmland recorded the highest share of organic agriculture in Sweden, with 24.8 % of its livestock raised organically and 28.5 % of its farmland used for organic crops and grazing. The national averages were 14.8 % for organic livestock and 15.9 % for organic land, according to data from the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Municipal leaders in Malmö, represented by the Green Party, argue that the city must increase its reliance on locally grown organic food to strengthen food security and protect remaining agricultural land. Malmö serves tens of thousands of meals daily in schools, preschools and care homes and aims to reduce the exploitation of farmland by prioritising purchases from nearby farmers, expanding urban gardening, and establishing organic supply contracts for emergency preparedness.
