Andreas Malm denied entry to UK ahead of Palestine event

Swedish academic and climate campaigner Andreas Malm has been denied entry to the United Kingdom after authorities revoked his Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The UK Home Office stated that Malm’s presence in the country is “not considered to be conducive to the public good,” though it declined to discuss the specifics of his individual case.

Malm, an associate professor at Lund University and author of “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” was scheduled to appear on a panel organized by Tribune magazine. He was set to speak alongside Huda Ammori, a co-founder of Palestine Action, a group that has been proscribed as a terrorist organization by the UK government. Malm expressed dismay at the decision, noting he has traveled to the UK regularly for decades for research and lecturing. He characterized the ban as a “drift into authoritarianism” and a threat to freedom of expression.

The decision has drawn criticism from various figures, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and author Sally Rooney, who described the move as “outrageous.” Malm intends to participate in his scheduled appearances via video link.
