Swedish academics debate threats to national democracy

Academic debate is intensifying regarding the state of Swedish democracy, with scholars presenting conflicting views on whether the nation faces an actual threat or if the term is being overextended.

Some political scientists argue that Swedish democracy remains strong, suggesting that warnings of its decline stem from an overly broad definition of the concept. They contend that as long as free and fair elections are conducted and the rules of the game are respected by losers, the core of electoral democracy remains intact.

Conversely, new reports titled ‘Skymningsläge’ from the think tank Arena Idé suggest a trend toward autocratization. Researchers Anette Novak and Göran Sundström argue that recent political decisions have weakened liberal democracy and the rule of law in Sweden. Sundström specifically criticizes the current government for creating legal inequalities and moving toward a more repressive state, noting a perceived disregard for the findings of official investigations.
