Swedish activist convicted of defamation for outing sexual offenders

The Stockholm District Court has convicted activist Jonatan Alfvén of aggravated defamation for publishing the names, photos, and residential locations of five convicted sexual offenders on Facebook and Instagram. Alfvén, who has a significant social media following, argued that his actions were justifiable as a means to warn the public and advocate for changes to defamation laws. However, the court ruled that the widespread dissemination of this information to a large, undefined audience was not defensible, even though the posts were based on public court records.

Alfvén has been sentenced to a suspended sentence and fines, and is ordered to pay damages to the victims. The ruling has reignited debate regarding Swedish defamation legislation. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed concern over current laws, noting that a committee has been appointed to review the legislation after suggesting that existing rules may unfairly target individuals attempting to protect others.
