Swedish agricultural confidence rises as Green Business Index climbs
The Green Business Index (GNI) for Sweden's agricultural sector rose from 83.7 to 90.8 during the third quarter of 2026, signaling an increase in economic confidence among farmers following a difficult spring marked by cost shocks.
Palle Borgström, chairman of the Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF), noted that while the rise reflects a sense that policymakers are listening more closely to the green industries, the improvement is insufficient to secure Sweden's food production ambitions, climate transition goals, or national preparedness.
Despite the improved outlook, rising costs continue to pressure businesses. Agricultural costs increased by 2.2 billion SEK over the last twelve months, with an 850 million SEK increase occurring between June and August alone. Rising prices for diesel, fertilizer, and soy remain significant challenges amidst global trade tensions and climate-related disruptions.
