Sweden faces economic shifts in food, energy, and fiscal policy

Sweden is experiencing various economic pressures across the food, energy, and housing sectors. According to Livsmedelsföretagen, food prices fell between 5.7 and 7.2 percent from April to July, a decrease exceeding the impact of VAT reductions. However, food producers report rising costs in transport, energy, and raw materials, warning of risks to future production.

In the energy sector, electricity prices in southern Sweden rose by approximately 70 percent during the May-July period compared to 2025. Factors contributing to this include low water reservoir levels, reduced nuclear production, and high European gas prices.

Regarding national finances, the National Institute of Economic Research (Konjunkturinstitutet) suggests there is a budget space for approximately 95 billion SEK in unfunded reforms over the next four years, contradicting government assessments of minimal fiscal room. Meanwhile, the housing market shows a trend reversal for small apartments, with one-room units seeing a 6.7 percent price increase in 2026.

Political discussions also highlight tensions regarding agricultural policy, with debates over the shift from EU-funded to national agricultural support and the need for increased food security and land-use protections.
