Swedish authorities warn of fake traffic‑fine SMS scams

The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has issued an alert that it never sends demand letters or payment requests for traffic fines via SMS or email. Recipients of such messages are urged not to click any links, provide personal or bank details, or make payments, and to report the incident to the police.

A separate incident involved a woman in her 70s from Vimmerby who received a text purporting to be from the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) offering a discount on a supposed speeding fine if paid within 24 hours. She did not follow the link and instead filed a police report, illustrating the ongoing wave of fraud attempts that fake official transport‑agency communications.

Police emphasize that no Swedish authority contacts citizens with discount offers or requests for bank‑ID authentication through SMS, and advise anyone receiving suspicious messages to hang up, ignore the text, and report it.
