Swedish businesses and climate activists demand political action

As the Swedish election approaches, business leaders and activists are calling for increased political stability and more ambitious climate policies.

The East Sweden Chamber of Commerce (Östsvenska Handelskammaren) reports that one-third of its member companies are seeking broad, long-term political agreements that span multiple mandate periods to reduce business planning uncertainty. The primary concern for these businesses is energy supply, specifically regarding availability, competitive pricing, and a functional market. Companies emphasize that increased electricity production and an expanded power grid are essential for productivity and international competitiveness.

In a separate movement, approximately 50,000 demonstrators gathered in Stockholm under the slogan ‘United for Climate’ to demand higher ambitions in climate policy. The protest included over 250 organizations, including various church representatives. Critics note that while household economics and energy prices dominate the political agenda, Sweden is currently not on track to meet its national climate goals or its obligations to the European Union.
