Berlin Pride vehicle attack kills one, injures 16

During the closing night of Berlin's Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebration on 25‑26 July 2026, a white van or small SUV drove into the crowd in Tiergarten near Lennéstraße. The impact killed a woman and injured 16 people, three of them with life‑threatening injuries. Police identified the driver as 21‑year‑old Abdul Ballout, a suspect known to authorities and linked to Islamist circles, and said he fled on foot after the vehicle struck a tree.

Mayor Kai Wegner described the incident as an "Angriff auf unsere freie und weltoffene Gesellschaft" (attack on our free and open society). Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called it an Islamist terror attack and raised the terror threat level. A massive police operation involving more than 2,200 officers and specialized units was launched, with searches in the Schöneberg district and aerial heat‑camera surveillance. The CSD parade was halted, the venue evacuated and the celebration cancelled. German officials pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.
