Swedish charities call for extended bereavement support for grieving parents

Three Swedish organizations—Barncancerfonden, Suicide Zero, and Hjärtebarnsfonden—are advocating for an extension of the current bereavement benefit, known as 'sorgepeng'. Currently, parents who lose a child are only entitled to ten days of temporary parental leave.

The organizations argue that the social insurance system is not designed for life-altering events such as the death of a child. They are proposing that the benefit be extended to six months and made more flexible. They note that approximately 500 children die in Sweden each year, leaving families to navigate profound grief while facing a sudden loss of financial support.

A Novus survey indicates that 69 percent of residents in western Sweden support improved economic assistance for parents who lose a child. Advocates highlight that once the ten-day period ends, parents often feel forced to seek medical certification for sick leave to receive compensation, a process they describe as complicated and arbitrary.
