Swedish coalition leaders seek unity after internal disputes

Leaders of Sweden's governing coalition and the Sweden Democrats have attempted to present a united front following recent public disputes within the Tidö Agreement partnership. The friction primarily involved Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch and Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson.

The disagreement centered on Busch's comments regarding an ‘extraordinary situation,’ in which she suggested she would not rule out supporting Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson as Prime Minister in the event of a major crisis or war. Åkesson questioned the reliability of the Christian Democrats following these remarks.

During a joint press conference, Busch clarified that an ‘extraordinary situation’ refers to events such as war or crisis, rather than political shifts like a new election. She stated she is prepared to face a new election if necessary but would not support Andersson under normal circumstances. Following this clarification, the parties moved to present a unified stance, specifically regarding new measures to criminalize participation in gang activities.
